How Do I Title My Accounts to Match My Trust?

When people set up a trust, they often feel a sense of relief, and they should. It’s a big step toward protecting what matters most. But one thing that surprises a lot of folks is that a trust doesn’t automatically “catch” every asset you own. For it to work the way you intended, your accounts need to be titled correctly.

And that part can feel confusing… but it doesn’t have to be.

Why the Title Matters

Think of your trust like a container. It only holds what you put into it. If an account is still titled in your personal name, the trust doesn’t control it — and that usually means probate, delays, and extra paperwork for the people you’re trying to make life easier for.

When the account title matches the trust, everything stays organized and moves the way youdesigned it to.

What Titling Actually Looks Like

Retitling simply means switching the legal owner from you as an individual to you as the trustee of your trust. Something like:

Jane Smith → Jane Smith, Trustee of the Jane Smith Revocable Living Trust dated January 1, 2025

That’s it. No dramatic overhaul — just a clarity update.

Which Accounts Typically Need Updating?

Most clients end up reviewing things like:

  • Checking and savings accounts
  • Non-retirement investment accounts
  • Real estate
  • Business ownership interests
  • Insurance or annuity contracts (in some situations)

Retirement accounts work differently, so they usually stay in your name — but this is where beneficiary designations really matter.

How to Make the Changes

Every bank or financial company handles this a little differently. Usually, they’ll ask for:

  • A Certificate of Trust
  • Your ID
  • Their standard ownership-change forms

If you’re not sure where to start, that’s completely normal. No one is born knowing this stuff; it’s something we walk clients through all the time.

A Quick Note About Beneficiaries

Even once accounts are retitled, beneficiaries should also be double-checked to make sure everything aligns with your plan. It’s an easy step to overlook.

If You’re Unsure, You’re Not Alone

If you find yourself thinking, “I don’t even know which accounts I have, let alone how they’re titled,”that’s more common than you might think. The good news is that this is all fixable, and it can be done step-by-step.
